EMU Athletics Participates in Walk to End Alzheimer’s

October 17, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Multiple programs from Eastern Michigan University athletics participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Sunday, Oct. 8, at Washtenaw Community College in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.

This year, EMU’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs, as well as the swim & dive team, all volunteered at the event. This served as the third consecutive year the gymnastics team participated in the walk.

“So many people have lost someone close to them with this disease,” said gymnastics Head Coach Katie Minasola. “Walking to end Alzheimer’s is the least we can do to help support the cause. The foundation is still taking donations so we just want to urge everyone to please help the cause, anything is appreciated!”

Both the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams took part in their second volunteering event in three weeks, as nearly 120 of their student-athletes participated in the JDRF One Walk Sept. 24, to help support victims of Type 1 Diabetes. Last weekend’s time off from competition was just another opportunity for the programs to volunteer their time to a good cause.

“It was our pleasure to assist with this great effort for Alzheimer research,” added men’s Head Coach John Goodridge.

Swim and Dive head coach, Peter Linn, was joined by members of his program as well, as they too jumped at the opportunity to volunteer their time and support for the annual event.

“We had some women participate yesterday and it’s something that I feel has or will touch everyone’s life at some point, and walking in support was important to them,” Linn explained.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is one of many volunteering opportunities Eastern is proud to participate in. Last year, EMU Athletics completed more than 3,500 volunteer hours for the fourth-straight year, upholding the long tradition of working closely with the campus and community to support various causes. HSU Softball Organizing Donations for Fire Victims

October 17, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball program is spearheading the efforts of the HSU Athletics Department in gathering donations to support relief efforts for Cardinal Newman High School and Hidden Valley Satellite School. Both schools were impacted by the fires in the Santa Rosa area.

“These fires have really hit home for a lot of our students and athletes here at HSU as well as other student-athletes in the CCAA,” said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. “When something like this happens this close to home, we want to do whatever we can to get involved and help out those who have been impacted. Although we can never replace what has been lost, we hope to make the impact just a little less by doing what we can to help.”

“Fire is a beast that can destroy homes and leave families feeling lost for far too long,” said interim Athletic Director Duncan Robins. “My family lost our house to fire when I was in high school. Friends helped us re-establish a bit of normalcy through their generous donations that I remember to this day. I hope our gifts help our friends down south similarly.”

A list of requested donation items is listed below and the deadline to donate is Wednesday, Oct. 18. Donations can be delivered to the HSU Athletics Department; its office is located next to Lumberjack Arena. Questions regarding donations can be directed to Coach Sarchett by emailing mcm13@humboldt.edu.

JCC Student Athletes Clean Veteran Markers At Lake View Cemetery

October 17, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

More than 1,200 veteran markers in Soldier’s Circle at Lake View Cemetery have been cleaned thanks to the athletes and coaches at Jamestown Community College.

On Friday, more than 130 students and coaches descended on Lake View Cemetery to perform the volunteer service project, which took about three hours to perform.

“It was amazing. It was really great to see a group that size come together and to be able to clean every marker on Soldier’s Circle. It was really an incredible sight,” said Hugh Golden, Lake View Cemetery business manager. “It was a great thing for the JCC students to do. People need to realize that they are giving back to the community. They are not just receiving from the community, but they are giving back too.”

Golden said the idea for the community service project came from Keith Martin, JCC athletic director, who realized the markers needed cleaned when he was at Soldier’s Circle during the Memorial Day service.

“I noticed many of the markers were covered with lichens and algae and thought having the student athletes and coaches clean the markers would be a great service project,” Martin said.

Golden said Martin then contacted Sam Genco, Lake View Cemetery superintendent, to ask about holding such a volunteer event and to set a date.

“It was set up through Sam. Sam is our resident expert when it comes to cleaning markers,”Golden said. “When Keith pitched the idea, it was Sam who took it and figured out the mechanics of how to do it, and do it properly.”

Golden said cleaning the markers is usually left to the families. He said cemetery officials will clean markers for a fee.

“To have a volunteer group come in and do that, it was wonderful,” he said.

Golden said there are other volunteer opportunities at the cemetery for community groups looking for a project.

According to a news release from JCC, before the cleaning commenced Col. Theresa Baginski, retired U.S. Army and JCC coordinator of modern languages, spoke to the student athletes about service; not only her military service, but service to the community as well. She told those gathered, after graduation they should plan for the service, not necessarily military service, but service to their communities.

The JCC athletics department would like to thank the following for their contributions which helped to make the project successful; the Southwestern Chapter of Reserve Officers; Chautauqua Brick, which donated cleaning materials and brushes; Lake View Cemetery, which donated cleaning solution; and Dr. Anthony Peppy, doctor of dental surgery who donated tooth brushes.

DU WOMEN’S LACROSSE GIVES BACK

October 17, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

DENVER— At the University of Denver and on the women’s lacrosse team, there is an emphasis that student-athletes represent the university in the classroom, on the field and in the community.

A month into the academic year, the Pioneers have volunteered at four different events throughout the Denver area, finding different causes and means to contribute.

On Sept. 9, the team went to Farrell B. Howell Elementary School to paint their playground.  Members encouraged the walkers at the 2017 Komen Colorado Race for the Cure on the morning of Sept. 24 when they volunteered at the event for the second year in a row. Later that week, on Sept. 28, DU participated in the Light the Night event sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, while the alumnae helped at the NEDA Walk to support Eating Disorder Awareness.

Last year, the lacrosse team was recognized for their community service at the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, winning the coveted Gold Vest Award.  The Gold Vest is given annually to an outstanding Pioneer team for excellence in community service, academics, spirit, leadership and athletic performance.

Fans interested in making a donation to the women’s lacrosse program can do so by clicking here. Your contribution will make a direct impact on the success of YOUR Pioneers. Thank you in advance for your unwavering support of our student-athletes and their quest for excellence.
